DC Microgrid Solar Power Systems

“Blackouts” are very common in Indian villages. It is the insufficient electricity supply.
Electrifying villages is a rigorous task for the government primarily due to lack of adequate infrastructure required.
Even in the presence of a Grid system, 24*7 provision of electricity cannot be guaranteed because of lack of resources to do so!!
Solar Energy run Microgrid systems have paved the path for the government to solve this energy crisis.
A microgrid is a Small-scale power grid system that can operate both independently or in combination with the location’s main electric grid system.

There is being done a lot on the government front for electrification of villages, building transmissions, high tension lines and much more.
But power scarcity has always been a major hiccup.
Here renewable energy comes to rescue!!
Building up DC microgrid systems with the help of solar energy can turn the tables. The major advantages of DC microgrids in the villages are:
Ø Electricity for the household:
Solar power rooftop DC microgrid system can provide electricity even to those communities and homes where it was difficult to reach for the government.
These can be set up without much need of infrastructure.

Ø Saving the loss of current on conversion:
The conventional Solar energy systems work on by generating Alternate current (AC) which is then converted into the Direct current (DC) and then used by home appliances.
In this whole process of conversion from one form to another 5-10% of energy get wasted.
While the DC current produced in microgrid system is directly supplied to the households and hence there is no wastage.

Ø Help in meeting the peak demand:
When the supply is unable to meet the demands, the only way left out is “Power cut” to regularize the peak energy demand.
But with the solar Power DC microgrid system running in an area, there are rare chances of facing power shortage.

Ø Surplus power generation by solar energy:
Rooftop solar power DC microgrids help generate an additional source of electricity. The somehow end the over dependency on the grid-tied electricity system.
It gives the privilege to switch between the sources of electricity to choose from.
Ø Savings on costly conversion inverters:
The rooftop solar energy systems installed earlier needed inverters, which would cost a lot of transformation from AC to DC.
This made the cost of installing the systems in villages expensive and hence less feasible. But the invention of DC microgrid system had made the whole process of setting up much cheaper.

Effects of power shortage
Power shortage affects the lives in a much broader manner than expected. It takes a toll on the economic, industrial and social growth.
Most of the villages receive only up to 4-5 hours of daily energy supply. This hinders the growth and progress of the community.
A quarter of billion of Indian population still has no access to electricity.
Using conventional sources of energy is not the ultimate measure for power shortage. It drains down the economy and harms the environment badly.
Using solar DC microgrid systems or any other solar innovations is a complete win-win situation on each front be it the economy, environment, sustainability and availability.
Ø Cost Benefit:
The government and the people would be in a comfortable position to invest in an energy source that won’t cut holes in their pockets and has a promising future.
While the people living villages would now no longer spend their lives in darkness.
Ø Balance in Demand and Supply:
The solar power systems help bridge the gap between demand and supply well.
With solar rooftop energy grid systems, there is no need to be dependent on the government transmission.
And it narrows down the need to invest in fossil fuel to generate electricity for meeting demands.
